King's Way Christian Schools

King’s Way,

As we continue to partner with our families, communication is crucial. The school leadership team is laser-focused on communication, process, and vision. We want to communicate well, but we also want to be accurate in our communication.

The information in the video is essential information. The information in the digital copy will assist you in the details of our Reopening Plan.

Does a child need to have ANY symptom to be excluded from school on the list?

According to the OSPI protocols, yes. The student must be excluded from school if the answer to any of the above questions is “yes” or they show any of the symptoms listed:

  • A cough
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • A fever of 100.4°F or higher or a sense of having a fever
  • A sore throat
  • Chills
  • New loss of taste or smell
  • Muscle or body aches
  • Nausea/vomiting/diarrhea
  • Congestion/running nose – not related to seasonal allergies
  • Unusual fatigue

Does anyone in your household have any of the above symptoms? Has your student been in close contact with anyone with suspected or confirmed COVID-19? Has your student had any medication to reduce a fever before coming to school?

If one of my children develops symptoms during the day, do all siblings get sent home that day with him or her?

If a student shows symptoms on campus the entire family unit would need to go home as well.

How are you preparing to provide enough high quality substitutes for all of the teachers who are also sent home due to a single symptom?

We are diligently preparing for the likely need for more subs by increasing the volume of qualified substitute teachers in our pool and developing a safety training program (Covid related and also our Standard Response Protocols). Once we communicate our plan with teachers we can share more information with our families.

Will you be honoring medical exemptions for not wearing a mask?

Yes. Please see pg. 20 in the Reopening Schools Document

Has a day been scheduled for schedule pick up and pictures for the HS?

Yes. Tuesday, September 8 students will come to school between 9:00 and 12:00 to:

  1. Pick up schedules
  2. Get student ID photos
  3. Pick up Chromebook
  4. Get assigned locker
  5. Turn in forms (will be sent electronically to students and parents the first week of September)

Is it possible for my children’s temp to be taken on their wrist instead of their forehead?

According to the CDC, FDA, and OSPI the safest option for both the screener and the student during a pandemic is the use of a non contact, infrared thermometer. The process that King’s Way will be using mirrors that of local health professionals and hospitals, which is getting the reading from the forehead. We are not able to accommodate individual requests for locations in which this reading is taken. We are also exploring the option of temperature reading cameras at each school’s entry.

Can I make a mask made of mesh?

A mask made with mesh does not satisfy the requirements from the DOH. Click this link for more information, or access the OSPI Reopening Schools document (page 20).

How will the distancing be set up for Kindergarteners? When we toured the school all the kids were sitting at tables together.

We will have to separate out the desks so each student has their own space. However, this does not mean they will be confined to this space all day. We fully expect K students to move around the room and have short periods of time where they may work in small groups or be on the carpet. We can do this while still protecting close contact interaction (less than 6 feet for 15 minutes).

Will there be recess for elementary kids and how will that work?

All elementary students will still have recess, it is vital for their brain to have a break. We will be dividing the outside space into 6 areas. Each class will have their own space to play for that day. Every day, each class will rotate to a new area. Each area will have its own equipment. Masks will be required because we expect children to play and be within 6 feet of each other doing so, if children want to keep their distance, they of course can. We will evaluate recess on an ongoing basis, but this is how we plan to start.

Are the kindergarteners still going to be able to have gym time and library time still?

The Kindergarteners and all Elementary students will still have their specials. Library and Art teachers will move to classrooms. Gym, will be outside as much as possible. Music will be in the band room which has adequate space for social distancing with our small classes. Specials teachers are being given 10 minutes between every class to sanitize equipment. We are evaluating the specials schedule to look at having less different specials in a week.

How will I drop off for elementary work? Will they have set times for drop off for each class or grade level?

There will be a staggered drop off for elementary students. It will begin with a screening of temperature and symptoms. Different grades will be asked to enter in set doors and flow will be one way. Parents will be able to enter the building with their elementary child, but are not allowed to be in the classroom. We will be providing short videos going through drop-off and pick-up for our elementary students and their families so that they can be familiar before returning to campus.

Will the morning mile still happen for elementary students?

We still want to do the morning mile because it is an excellent way to start the day for our elementary students. We are still looking at physical distancing and may have to separate the morning mile into 2 or more groups.

Will there be any barriers like clear plastic between students when at their desk?

No, we are not planning on having plastic barriers.

Is the school doing something with the floorplan on the class so six foot apart distancing can happen?

Yes. Each student’s desk will be 6’ apart from each other.

How will social distancing be organized for high school lunch?

High school students will have several different areas they can eat. The areas will provide room for us to still uphold the requirement of being 6’ apart.

Will the school be allowed to offer band and choir?

Yes.

How will community or classroom supplies be managed?

Whenever possible, we will be limiting shared materials. In some classes, such as art or science, there could be instances of students sharing things. Before and after, students will wash their hands and the materials will be sanitized. In addition, some rooms will have UCV wands to sanitize shared materials that may be hard to sanitize in a traditional way.

What is the plan for sports/PE?

All school sponsored athletic activities are governed by the WIAA. The season dates, Covid protocols, requirements, etc. have changed frequently. Please go to their website for updates (https://wiaa.com/default.aspx).  PE will still happen. We are working on how these details will look, but we are certainly interested in having the students outside as much as possible.

Online Academy Info & FAQ’s

So if we do the online academy will the kids be able to ask questions/“meet” with the teacher if they’re struggling? Or is it more like following the same curriculum and seeing the lessons live in a “homeschool” type setting? I’m just trying to figure out the parents role.

The Online Academy Handbook outlines the role of everyone (student, parent, home mentor, online academy learning liaison).

If field trips are able to happen will the online academy kids be allowed to join the class for that day?

Online Academy students are invited to participate in any on-campus activities out of the following list that they would like to:

  • Chapel
  • Field trips
  • Clubs
  • Assemblies
  • Athletics
If a class does not have online academy students, will the class still be recorded? We see a lot of value in being able to go back and rewatch a lesson even if we are Face to Face.

Yes, videos will be made in each class and uploaded for reference on Blackbaud.
