Third Grade Curriculum
Academics
Reading/Language Arts skills are strengthened as students are instructed in phonetic awareness, fluency, vocabulary, and text comprehension. Students learn strategies to help them become strong readers and spellers. Language Arts emphasizes development of writing skills through parts of speech, punctuation, sentence structure, editing, and varied writing.
Mathematics begins introducing mathematical concepts which emphasize the reasoning behind the operations in math. Focus on problem solving, money, time, metric & standard measurement, mastery of addition & subtraction, continued work on multiplication and introduction of division facts.
Science focuses on the exploration of God's world with emphasis on the forest, the weather, vertebrates including an animal kingdom notebook, and the five senses.
Social Studies introduces geography with an emphasis on the continents, Native American tribes and cultures, explorers, and the development of the United States as a nation. Students participate in a patriotic musical.
Art continues emphasis on developing small motor skills and creativity through a variety of mediums, crafts and projects.
Spirituality
Bible Curriculum emphasizes relating Christian faith to everyday life experiences as students learn to develop Christian character and memorize Scripture. Students examine the lives of Abraham, Jacob, Joseph, and Daniel. Scripture memorization makes God’s Word a working principle of life. Verses are chosen for application to lesson objectives and the needs of the students. Chapel/Worship experiences occur each week. Students come together in a weekly chapel service for worship and a Bible centered program. Each class is scheduled to share one of these programs. Students also participate in a devotional/worship time in their classrooms each week.
Special Events & Field Trips
Pilgrim/Native American Day, Historical site field trip, Gingerbread houses, Valentines Day Tea, Theater presentation field trip, Grandparents Day.
