Second Grade Curriculum

Academics

Reading/Language Arts are covered by the Harcourt curriculum. We also use the Spalding Phonogram Cards for phonics instruction.

Mathematics continues to cover integer values zero to one-hundred, measurements, addition & subtraction facts and the introduction of multiplication facts, graphing and patterning. Saxon curriculum is used for math instruction.

Science units include ocean life, dinosaurs and frog & pond life.

Social Studies units include developing an appreciation for the different kinds of communities, focus on people and their careers within our community, mapping skills and a mapping unit which involves making a Gingerbread Man Village and another unit for mapping which sends sixty-three Flat Stanleys around the world.

Art places emphasis on developing small motor skills and creativity through a variety of mediums.

Handwriting skills are practiced and improved by working through manuscript letters for the first part of the year and introducing cursive writing by mid-year.

Spirituality

Bible Curriculum emphasizes Bible character and their life scenarios. Students learn from their character qualities and how to emulate these traits in their daily lives. Chapel is attended each week. Each class is also scheduled to put on one chapel service a year. Scripture memorization makes God's Word a working principle of life as we relate it to the units we are covering in class.

Field trips & Special Events

Throughout the year our second grade class goes on three field trips and has four special events. Field trips include Franz Bakery, Live Theater Performance and Casey Center Frog Pond. Special Events include Grandparent's Day, Father's Day Picnic, One-hundreds Day and Career Days.
