Kindergarten Curriculum

Academics

Reading/Language Arts at King’s Way is taught using Harcourt Reading Curriculum and is a resource for Kindergarten in the areas of Phonetic Awareness, Phonics, Literature and Assessment. In addition, we adapt the Spalding “Writing Road to Reading.” The students will be involved in listening skills and oral language reinforced by songs, games, and motion.

Mathematics is taught at King’s Way using Saxon Math curriculum. We cover material through the first half of First grade lessons. Subjects include (but aren’t limited to): sequencing, counting by 5’s and 10’s, calendar, ordinal position, simple addition and subtraction, telling time, money, and measurement.

Science in Kindergarten is learned through seasonal topics and holidays to introduce a wide variety of information. Integrating how God made all things and is in all things is emphasized through subjects such as, Apples, Pumpkins, Penguins, Snow, Weather Cycle and Plants.

Daily Activities in Kindergarten allow the students to work together in large groups, small groups, individually and also with social play times. Circle time is spent gathered casually and promotes all class participation. We practice skills that are basic in September and increase in skill level through June. Centers are used to enable the students to participate in small group learning. They are divided into four groups and everyday they complete a different activity together. This rotates each day so by Friday they all have experienced all four activities. Offices are used for individual assessment. A folder type cubicle is set up around each student and allows them to show what they have learned without help or interaction from other students.

Parent Helpers are vital to the success of our program. The interaction allows the parents to see their student in action and also offers them an opportunity to feel a part of the educational process.

Spirtuality

In Kindergarten, we teach Christian character traits through participation in stories, music and movement and bi-weekly Bible memorization. Biblical principles are integrated throughout the curriculum but our focus is during a daily circle time and participation in a school-wide chapel each week. Monthly character traits include Obedience, Faith, Thanksgiving, Love, Honesty, Perseverance, Friendship, Kindness and Growing God’s Way. Our curriculum base is generated by ACSI.

Special Events

Thanksgiving is our Kindergarten Program with costumes, performance and even a feast prepared by our kindergartners! Christmas Candyland is a life-sized board game where the children actually are in the game! It is decorated with Symbols of Christmas and the students demonstrate their spelling skill of color words. Grandparents Day is a special time where grandparents participate in a day of school with the student. We write a book telling about our grandparents and demonstrate a typical day in circle time. Graduation is a time of celebration for a world of growth and readiness for First Grade.
