Fourth Grade Curriculum
Academics
Reading/Language Arts studies is based on Harcourt curriculum, which centers around a variety of quality children's literature. This program is a combination of vocabulary, reading comprehension, spelling, grammar, and writing. It emphasizes higher level thinking questions, a variety of reading strategies, and has different forms of assessment. In fourth grade, students will be reading and discussing about how real people and story characters solve problems and make the most of changes. These stories are inspirational and lead to discussions about being a kid of character. Language Arts emphasizes the development of writing skills and a focus in fourth grade is writing good quality paragraphs.
Mathematics continues to review addition, subtraction, and multiplication. New concepts such as fractions, double digit multiplication, long division, decimals and more will be introduced.
History is introduced to students in fourth grade by beginning a study of Washington State history. Students develop an appreciation for our state, its people, resources and history through classroom study, as well as field trips, including a trip to our State Capitol. Different topics of study include NW Native Americans, explorers such as Lewis & Clark, and pioneers along the Oregon Trail.
Science begins exploring God’s world through study of astronomy, oceanography, geology, insects, sound and hearing.
Spirituality
Bible Curriculum is designed to make the Word of God more meaningful to the lives of the students. Fourth grade students will focus on the New Testament as they study the life of Christ, how the Holy Spirit works in their lives, and how to develop Christian character.
Students come together every Thursday afternoon for Chapel, a time of praise & worship and Bible centered teaching. Each class is also scheduled to present a chapel program for the rest of the school.
Scripture memorization makes God’s Word a working principle of life. Scriptures are chosen to emphasize God’s love and how to share that love with others. They usually tie in with what we learn each week in our Bible curriculum.
