First Grade Curriculum
Academics
Reading/Language Arts is based on the Harcourt Reading Program and is the foundation of our reading instruction. As a supplement, Spalding Writing Road to Reading is used, providing a strong phonetics based program that produces strong readers and spellers.
Mathematics places emphasis on developing an understanding of numbers with insight into the patterns of mathematics through the use of hands-on materials. Integer place values zero to one-hundred, measurement, time, money, and basic addition and subtraction facts are all covered. Saxon curriculum is used for math instruction.
Science emphasizes how God made our bodies and senses. We also learn about insects and space.
Physical Education emphasizes large-muscle group development, body and space awareness, and basic skills. Most activities are individual in nature to build confidence and self-esteem.
Social Studies programs are designed to develop an appreciation for our country, its people, its principles and its national symbols.
Library — Introduction to the library with emphasis on book care, library procedures, and cultivating a love for the written language.
Artistic Development focuses on developing small motor skills and creativity through a variety of mediums.
Spirituality
Bible Curriculum emphasizes relating Christian faith to everyday life experiences by memorizing Scripture and developing Christian character by examining lives of people in the Bible.
Special Events & Field Trips
Portland Children's Museum, OMSI Planetarium, Portland Zoo, Thanksgiving Feast, Hundred Day Party and Mother's Day Tea.
