Fifth Grade Curriculum
Academics
Reading/Language Arts focuses on reading comprehension rather than mechanics. We work on critical thinking skills. Spelling and vocabulary are incorporated into the reading program. Language Arts curriculum's focus is grammar, along with developing creative writing and research skills. Children will use these skills to publish a class book and research a country.
Mathematics incorporates continued review of basic math concepts with incremental introduction of fraction, decimals, percents and geometry.
Science emphasizes continued exploration of the wonders of God's world. Our focus is on the earth, mammals, dissection, nutrition, and rockets.
Physical Education focuses on fine motor skills, & sports skills. Students participate in Presidential Physical Fitness Program.
Social Studies emphasizes the study of Old World history and world geography. We research and write a country report.
Library strengthens research skills and engenders an appreciation of literature.
Art introduces students to historical artists, their times in history and their works. During the course of their studies, students get the chance to experiment with various styles, mediums, tools and genres corresponding with the historical studies of artists.
Spirituality
Bible Curriculum emphasizes the study of the Old Testament patriarchs, prophets and kings, with life application focus. Weekly Scripture memory is required in order to hide God's Word in children's hearts and build a firm foundation for lives. During Chapel/Worship on Thursday afternoons, elementary students meet in the sanctuary for prayer and worship. Each class is scheduled to be involved in these programs.
